You can create a Google account for free. Go to Google Scholar and click Sign In in the right upper corner, then choose Sign up. A Google account allows you to save some settings in Google Scholar (the ‘scholar preferences’), but an account is not needed to search or to create alerts. If you want to create a Google Scholar Citations profile, a Google account is needed (see for more information the chapter Google Scholar: YOU in Google Scholar).
