Business & Management (RSM)

This guide gives an overview of recommended sources for business and management research

Introduction

What is Open Access?

Open Access is an international movement in academia that promotes free and unrestricted online access to scholarly publications. Its core principle is that research funded by public resources should be available to everyone, anywhere in the world, without financial or legal barriers.

There are several ways to make your research openly available, often referred to as different “routes” to Open Access. These include publishing directly in an Open Access venue (Gold or Diamond OA), making articles accessible in subscription-based journals for a fee (Hybrid OA), or depositing your work in a repository such as Pure (Green OA).

For a full overview of the different types and how they apply at Erasmus University, please see the official EUR Open Access page.

Why it matters for young researchers:

  • Greater visibility and citations – Publishing OA increases the chances your work will be read, cited, and shared worldwide.
  • Building academic reputation – Making your research accessible helps you gain recognition early in your career.
  • Compliance with funder and university policies – Many funders and institutions now require OA; starting early prevents complications later.
  • Global impact and collaboration – OA allows researchers, practitioners, and the public everywhere to benefit from and build on your work.
  • Equity in knowledge sharing – You contribute to a fairer system where research isn’t locked behind paywalls.

Tools for Finding and Sharing Open Access Research

Open Access isn’t only about publishing – it’s also about discovering and sharing knowledge more effectively. Below are useful tools, divided by purpose:

Finding Open Access Articles, Books, and Data:

Not all journals are equally trustworthy. Use these tools to make informed publishing choices:

  • Deposit accepted manuscripts in Pure (EUR’s repository) to ensure Green OA.
  • Use ORCID or personal researcher pages to connect your OA publications with your academic identity.
  • Share preprints (where permitted) on platforms such as SSRN (social sciences).
