Since August 2022, EUR researchers can connect their ORCID iD and record to their Pure profile. Publications, employment information, a link to the EUR Research Portal and other author ids are pushed from the Pure repository to the ORCID record. So far, over 12.000 publications were forwarded to ORCID records!

Some questions and remarks we received:

  • The employment information: from the Pure registry only the name of the university is pushed to the ORCID record. As a researcher, you probably also want to add your school, role and start date in that role. Unfortunately, you can't edit the information added via Pure, so you have to add that information manually, in a new entry. However, the information added by the university has added value for others: it works as a 'trust maker' - the university (in our case 'EUR Research Portal') confirms that you work at the EUR.
If you don't want the employment information pushed from Pure visible in your ORCID record, change the visibility setting of that entry from 'Everyone' to 'Trusted parties' (recommended) or 'Only me'. If you delete the information, it will be added again when the data between Pure and ORCID is synchronized the next day.

  • The works information: if a publication is already in your ORCID record, for example added by Crossref, imported via Scopus or added manually, ORCID will merge the entries if the same identifier - like the DOI - is available. The work will be visible once, showing the information of the 'preferred source'. You can select this preferred source per item. If there is no identifier or if there different identifiers, then ORCID will not merge the entries automatically, but you can combine the works, to display them as a single item.
Work added twice in an ORCID record - Scopus is the preferred source

Publons moved to Web of Science. Your profile is now a 'Web of Science Researcher Profile'. You can connect this profile to your ORCID record to:

  • add publications from Web of Science to the Works section of your ORCID record. This can be especially useful if you want to add publications without a DOI, like meeting abstracts or book reviews.
  • add peer reviews to the Peer Review section of your ORCID record
  • add a link to your Web of Science Researcher Profile to the Other IDs section - showing your ResearcherID, the identifier used within Web of Science.

If you didn't have Publons profile, you can create your Web of Science Researcher Profile, by registering for a Web of Science account (maybe you already have one, to recieve alerts and save queries in Web of Science). The profile shows your publications, verified peer reviews, verified editor records, and metrics.

You can read more in the blogpost 'The next generation of Web of Science Researcher Profiles'.

You can now connect your ORCID iD and record to Pure. After making this connection and giving 'EUR Research Portal' permission, publications visible in the EUR Research Portal will automatically be added to your ORCID record. A link to your profile on the EUR Research Portal, employment information and (if available) links to other author identifiers will be added.

If you have publications in your ORCID record without a publication date: it looks like they have been moved from the end of your Works list to the beginning of the list.

You can add the publication date, to make sure the publication is sorted correctly:

  • Click the Make a copy and edit icon (the two arrows, next to the visibility setting options)
  • Add at least the year in the Publication date section
  • Click Save changes
  • When needed choose the preferred source, to make sure the version with the year is visible: click the of xx behind Preferered source and click Make preferred source behind the version you want to make visible.

The names of up to 10 authors are now shown directly in your ORCID record, behind the header CONTRIBUTORS. This information is shown for works added via Crossref, Crossref Metadata Search, Europe PubMed Central, Scopus, Publons, etc., but not for work entries that were entered manually or edited after importing.

The names are shown as they are in the original source, so you'll see different formats for your name - all initials, no initials, first name last name, last name, first name, etc.

Example from the ORCID record of Rutger Engels - the nine authors are shown behind Contributors

ORCID has redesigned the Account settings page - available by clicking your name in your ORCID record. This page gives an overview of your settings, like the default visibility setting and which emails you like to receive and how often. The Account settings page also contains a link to create a QR-code for your ORCID iD.

The information about your Trusted parties, like the organizations (publishers, databases etc) you have granted permission to read your ORCID iD or to update your ORCID record, moved to a separate page. There you can find the links to revoke the access.

You can connect your Open Science Framework (OSF) account to your ORCID iD: use the 'Sign in with ORCID' option, authorize OSF to get your ORCID iD, and make sure you enter the email address used for your OSF account (otherwise a new OSF account will be created for you). After making this connection, your ORCID iD will be included in the metadata of your new preregistrations and preprints.

Recommendations for preregistrations

  • The DOI is registered via DataCite.
  • In the Works section of your ORCID record, use the DataCite Search & Link Wizard to go to your DataCite Profile. There you can enable the auto-update via DataCite, via the 'Get ORCID Token' button.
  • Via DataCite Commons you can claim your preregistrations not in your ORCID record yet: search by DOI or title, click the title of your preregistration and use the 'Claim DOI' button. The preregistration will be added to your ORCID record. ORCID has no specific publication type for preregistrations, so it will be added as 'Other'.

Recommendations for preprints

  • The DOI is registered via Crossref.
  • If you haven't given Crossref permission to auto-update your ORCID record for you, give them this permission when asked. It might be good to check your notification preferences in your ORCID record: make sure that below 'An ORCID member wants your permission to add or update my ORCID record' 'Never' isn't selected.
  • Use the 'Add DOI' option in the Works section of your ORCID record to add preprints not in your ORCID record yet - you might have to edit the metadata and delete the information in the journal title field.

The Pure portal was launched! The portal presents information in Pure, the research information system of the EUR, for example, your research output, activities awards/prizes, and press/media to the research community and other stakeholders.

You can add your ORCID iD to your Pure profile on the Pure portal:

  • Go to https://pure.eur.nl/admin and login with your ERNA-id
  • On your profile page, click Edit profile
  • Click Add existing ORCID
  • Add your ORCID iD - enter only the 16 digits including the hyphens

Option in Pure to add an existing ORCID

  • Click Apply
  • Save the change in Pure

The link to your ORCID record is shown under your name your Pure profile.

Tip: add a link to your Pure profile in your ORCID record as well - you add the link in the 'Websites and social links' section.

Please note: currently (February 2022) it's not possible to connect your ORCID iD with your Pure account, so there will be no exchange of data between the two systems.

When you publish an article with your ORCID iD, your ORCID iD will be part of the metadata of the article. Crossref will then be able to auto-update your ORCID record for you, but they need your explicit permission to do this. Crossref will ask for this permission via a message in your ORCID Inbox and via email.

To make sure you receive this message, check the notification preferences of your ORCID record: the setting below 'An ORCID member wants your permission to add or update my ORCID record' should not be 'Never'. The other choices are daily, weekly, quarterly or immediately.

Selection of the notificiation preference to receive a message when an ORCID member wants to add or update your ORCID record

Message in ORCID Inbox from Crossref - do you give permission to auto-update your ORCID record?

If you want to know what Crossref adds to your ORCID record, check the settings for 'Items added or edited in your record by a trusted party'.
